Every filter passes certain frequencies (passband) and filters out others (stopband). Low-pass filter, for example, passes low frequencies, and suppresses high frequencies. That would result in a steep characteristic fall after cutoff frequency, i.e. it would pass in the passband, but start very efficiently rejecting frequencies right after cutoff, in the stopband. Such filters are often made either as lower order filters with larger distortions, or higher order filters (with more components).
