Valve (tube) radio question ..... ?
In a mains-powered valve radio, the frequency changer is usually something like a UCH81; which contains a triode used as the local oscillator and a hexode used as the mixer. As I understand it, either G1 which is fed from the antenna or G3 which is fed from the oscillator can repel electrons emitted from the cathode, so giving a signal which is the product of the LO and RF.
In a battery portable valve radio, the frequency changer is usually a DK96 which is just a heptode. There does not seem to be a separate oscillator triode!
How can this possibly work?

@ Mark G, the set is most definitely a superhet -- you can pick up the LO on another set. I just don't see HOW it's oscillating ..... ?!
It is called autodyne circuit.
It is possible because part of the circuit makes an oscillator and part acts as mixer. The similar circuit was used in many transistor radios.
The main reason is that in battery powered radios main energy consumer is heating filaments so designers tried to limit number of valves.
