There is obviously racism in the mental health system. My research has found that Drs rarely diagnose a black person with 'bi-polar' disorder. In the rare cases where this happens, the individual is often very wealthy and famous. On the other hand any white person with modd disorders will be given the label bi-polar as it is deemed more respectable than schizophrenia (which is reserved mainly for the black people).
A lot of people on here are saying that they are totally different conditions. This is not necessarily true. Certainly there are many people who clearly fit into one or the other category, but there are are also people for whom the diagnosis is less clear-cut. The symptoms can be very similar: episodes of uncontrolled/unusual/unpredictable behaviour, hearing voices, aggression, delusions are some examples. A lot of people with bipolar illness say that they get back to their usual level of functioning between episodes of illness, but that can still be true for people experiencing schizophrenia. In many cases anti-psychotic medication (ie that used to manage schizophrenia) is used to manage bipolar illness particularly when the person is acutely ill. Sometimes when people have been ill for a long time with either bi-polar or schizophrenic illness they end up with a diagnosis of schizo-affective disorder. So there is a blurring.
Ron Coleman was once diagnosed with schizophrenia, and now does work with managing voices and also the recovery model. He also has a web-site.He says that the difference between schizophrenia and bi-polar is due to the size of your bank balance! He says if you are perceived as well off you are more likely to be diagnosed with bi-polar illness.
Psychiatry is an inexact science. I believe that class issues are a factor in diagnosis (but then so are many other things, and skilled professionals look at the whole picture). So you may have a point about race, I don't know the statistics, other than there was some concern about diagnosis of schizophrenia in black people.
