What is wrong with my car?
I have a 1984 AMC Eagle which I purchased as a classic vehicle. Recently, the car failed to start - I turned the key and nothing happened. The dash lights up, the clock is correct and the lights work, so the battery isn't the problem. After I let the car sit for a while, it started right up, and I was able to restart it over and over again with no problem. However, if I put the car in gear and then shift back to park, it won't start again unless I let it sit for a few hours. I was thinking the neutral safety switch was the issue, but according to the service manual it also controls the backup lights and they still work. Which leads me to think it's the starter, but I can't explain the fact that shifting the car in and out of gear is what causes the problem. Any ideas? Neither answer seems to make sense.
That sure sounds like a bad neutral switch. When it does it again try wiggling the shift lever while you try to start it.Or get an ohm meter and check the switch
