He overcomes schizophrenia and attains a true sense of accomplishment, and even a sense of greatness. In this movie, the theme of discrimination against mental illnesses becomes lucid. This is developed greatly by the main character and the theme also adds suspense to the film. Mental illness still remains misunderstood in all places, even though it affects so many people. Watching this film, it helps people sympathize
Al R is right to question the idea of there being a "Thin line between genius and sanity." It just isn't true. Most geniuses are sane and productive. In fact a famous study by Terman which followed extremely bright people, geniuses included, found that as a group they were better emotionally adjusted and happier than those of lesser ability. John Nash was simply an exception to the rule.
As far as morals to the movie, some that come to mind are:
"Love can transform us and help us reach our highest potential." After all, this was a love story of Alicia and John. She saw the man, not just the disease.
Another is "With extreme will and focus, we can succeed in life despite overwhelming personal obstacles." His achievements were certainly an indication of the power of the human spirit. He succeeded despite the battle against his own personal demons.
Another lesson is the value of deinstitutionalization in the treatment of the mentally ill. John could have simply been institutionalized for most of his life due to his schizophrenia, and in previous decades, he probably would have been. Instead, his stays at mental hospitals were temporary, and every effort was mad to reintegrate him into society. Had this not occurred, his potential would not have been realized, and he and society would have lost "a beautiful mind
