Is the zoo med reptisun 10.0 UVB desert basking light safe for my bearded dragon? +Other important questions.?
Yesterday I bought my first baby bearded dragon. Currently I am using two reptisun 10.0 UVB bulbs from Zoo Med in a compact lid. I did reseach before on the type of lighting you need but i didn't come across the fact that coil bulbs can cause them to go blind. Is this true? What will be the best bulb to use for the UVB lighting. Also our basking light is only reaching a temp around 80 degrees Farenheit and i know it should be around 100- 115. I have a 75 gallon tank and a 100 watt bulb. Do I need a higher watt? Or would it be best to get a UV basking light that will combine UVA and UVB? Another thing i noticed was that the infrared light i use for heat at night was reaching temps just over 80 i turned it off and checked the temp in the morning and it was in the low 70s, does this mean I wont need a heat source for night time?
Thank you very much for any help. My little guy or girl and I appreciate it.
What do you think of the name Reptar/ Rep-tar for a boy ?
We have 2 full grown beardies and use a 10.0 160 watt Merury Vapor UV bulb along with a 150 watt heat lamp fro each tank. Both are made by Zoo-Med and seem to keep the temps right. Retail pet stores charge a fortune for Mercury bulbs. It's better to order from retilesupply.com. Petco sells MVB for around $75.00 which is insane. Reptile Supply sells the same bulb for around $40.00.
At night, if the temps drop below 65 degrees, we use a ceramic heating element. Again from Rep. Supply. We live in Las Vegas so during the summer we don't need any heat sorce at all. I hear from everyone, including our vet that 65 degrees or higher doesn't require external heat sources.
Also, a 70 gallon tank may be to big for a baby dragon.
We have 3 beardies all together, 2 males 1 female and used greek god names. Our biggest, male, is Apollo. Our female is Athena and our 1 yr. old baby is Orion.
Good luck with your new beardie. Taking care of one is all trial & error. It can get costly until you find the right combo that works best for your dragon but if you end up with a healthy, happy reptile then it's all worth it. And remember, better for your beardie to be a bit too warm than too cold.
