Probably a stupid question.. but I'm trying to program an AVR ATMega chip. The schematics (http://www.rjblog.net/pdfs/CMU800MIDIKit_20080113RevB.pdf) specify headers for SCK, MISO, MOSI, RESET and two for GND. The headers are positioned in such a way (http://www.rjblog.net/images/IMG20080113A.php) that I could only think of connecting them to my programmer (http://www.sparkfun.com/products/14) with female to male jumper wires. I've tried getting PonyProg to recognize the chip both with and without power supplied to the circuit, yet neither worked.
I bet it's pretty apparent I'm new to this. I thought I did a pretty thorough job checking to make sure everything's set up appropriately. The only thing I could figure was that jumper wires aren't able to transfer data or something.
I gave my specific problem in case anyone could help, but I'm also just wondering in general if all wires are capable of transferring data. Thanks for the help.
Transferring data is a lot different than supplying voltage. Proper cables are manufactured to tight specifications for data. Data cables like cat5 and usb and serial all have very different standards. If you look at these you will notice the individual pairs of wires are twisted in a certain way. Some have more twists per foot of cable than others within the same cable. This is to keep the signal from degrading.
