I have had two russian dwarfs ( they called them siberian dwarfs), and now I have two "winter whites", but to me they look EXACTLY the same. Is there even a difference? Also, the ones I just got, I'm not sure how old they are but I'm thinking they are pretty young because they are still pretty small, and they don't seem to have enough strength to climb up the tubes or run in the wheel. I am wondering if this is normal?
Also they are scratching a lot, what's up with that? I haven't had hamsters for about 2 or 3 years, but I still had all the supplies and am using them. I cleaned the cage and all the tubes thoroughly, and used the wood shavings and food that I had kept from a few years ago. Is this okay? Or do they need a brand new bag of wood shavings and food? Every week I will throw everything out and put in fresh, but its from the bag that I've had for a few years.
Ok, so ever since I got my hammy, I have brushed up on my knowledge of all things hamster. As you call them "Russian Dwarfs'' they are actually called Campbell's Dwarfs. My hamster is one actually. Winter Whites and Campbell's are very similar and were once considered the same species except... Winter Whites usually grow a white coat during the winter. That is how most tell them apart. If they are very young, they probably aren't that strong to climb that much yet. My hamster scratches a lot too. It's normal and healthy. But if you notice skin flakes or dry patches, red marks or any other skin things, then there might be a problem. For the bedding, I would consider getting new bedding. I would prefer CareFresh bedding(: Keeping bedding that long can have tiny parasites and dust in it. Maybe that is the problem with your itchy hams(: I really hope I helped
