i think you should consider a flash based recorded. there are many that will do a good job and it's far more efficient and easy to use.
mini disc is harder to use and wold need the unit to transfer the files. flash based can simply slot into a computer like a standard SD card would.
remember to use a clapper board so you can sync sound!
