diagnostic car to laptop?
what interface lead do i need for diognestic fault finding,its for a vauxhall vectra 1996 or it may be 1997 16 valve 2 lt sri.the female socket in the car is recangular the sides of the socket do not taper,its 16 pin the pins avalable are...3,4,5,6,7,8,12,16,it has been sugested that the socket in the car is the early version,as the sides dont taper,,,hope someone can help
I own a shop, and I think you may have an OBD-1 system. Just because it is a 96 doesn't mean its an OBD-2. I know... I will hear it on this one, but they did make some OBD-1 systems that were outside the USA. Normally I would suggest you get an adapter for an OBD-2 to a USB cable to go to the laptop, but if you can't then you may have to get a different plug, and put your wires in it to resolve the issue. It could be an early OBD-2, but I have my doubts since it doesn't taper. One way to tell the difference is this; If it has more than one O-2 sensor, such as one before the cat converter, and one after the cat converter. The OBD-1 didn't read gases past the cat converter, and the OBD-2 did. Get a connector from a junkyard, and put your wires in it "if" it's an OBD-2 system, and you will resolve the issue.
Part 2:
The paper clip test does NOT work on all vehicles. Only GM produced vehicles are that way, and any others you will cause severe damage to the computer by hooking a paper clip to the ADL. If there is any doubt about it, then it would be best to not hook anything to the connector. Since the vehicle is boarder line as to the type of system it has, then it would only be logical to determine the type before hooking any scan tool to the ADL.
