What is the difference between a nucleotide, a nitrogen base, and a base pair?
I've been confused as to what the difference is between these three. I thought that a nucleotide was adenine, thymine, cytosine, or guanine, but after looking at a confusing diagram, I think that is incorrect. I have a huge bio test tomorrow on DNA and its hard because my teacher does not teach us very well! If you could please help clarify if you know what you're talking about. Thanks!
First do you know what the sugar phosphate backbone of DNA is? It's the outer part of the DNA on both sides. It's composed of Phosphate and a deoxyribose sugar.
A nucleotide is the combo of a phosphate, a deoxyribose sugar and 1 base (either A, T, C, or G).
A base pair is the actual pairing of 2 bases. A with T and C with G.
A nitrogen base is the actual A, T, C, and G alone. (A is a nitrogen base, so is T, C, G)
