I have a Ford Tourus LX. It still has the original stock sound system in it. I don't see any wording where it sais it is a premium system. I want to get better sound in the car, Should I just replace the stock speakers and use a portable cd player to listen to my music through the tape deck{I don't know the wattage of the stock system} What can I do that will be budgeted to put good sound in my car. all opions welcome. Or should I replace the entire system?
Okay, first of all, the "wattage" of the speakers you buy makes absolutely no difference at all. The only thing that DOES make a big difference is the size of the speakers, the depth of the speakers, and just as important, the efficiency of the speakers.
Since you plan on "pushing" them with about 7-8 watts each, buy speakers that are really efficient, above 91 SPL @ 1w/1m. Also, unless you REALLY like midrange, at the expense of the highs and the bass, get 2-way speakers. Both the woofer and the tweeter will get more power, and will sound much, much better.
Just a hint: in most newer cars, replacing the factory head unit is hard to do. They've started putting other components into them. For instance, with most of the newer Chevrolets, you'll no longer have power door locks, and your remote won't work, if you remove the factory stereo. I have no idea about your car, though. You'll have to do some research on it, to see if it's possible to replace the factory stereo. If you can, it's definitely worth it. Good luck.
