Best micro-cassette recorder?

What is the best micro-cassette recorder to record dictation.

I'm a doctor and record notes for secretaries to type out.

I have a Sony brand but my secretary says it gives a lot of hissing noise from the speaker.

I tried digital recorder, but it is much worse.

How do I eliminate the hissing from obviously a cheap speaker?

The hissing is probably due to a low input signal -- your mouth is too far away from the microphone or you speak too softly so she has to turn the volume way up and gets more hiss than voice. I'd suggest a lapel mic or headset mic, if you want your hands free, or just a regular mic that you can plug in to the recorder. Consider turning off the VOX and just use the record button, since the VOX tries to automatically compensate for what's coming into the recorder -- and maybe it's compensating you out.

If you go with a good digital recorder and the above suggestions don't help, you can transfer the recording to a computer via USB and use filtering software (like for tapes/records to CD transfers) to reduce any noise or boost the volume of your voice and then give your secretary the processed version. The digital recorder will also be less prone to mechanical problems like tape breakage, magnetic distortion, tape oxide build-up on the heads, etc.
