How do you tune an elect, guitar using a digital tuner?
bought our son (16) a Fender Stratocaster for christmas and a Fender automatic digital tuner. Well there doesn't seem to be anything automatic about it, either it came with no instructions or my son in his excitement threw them away by mistake. I play the drums (for my own pleasure) but am completely lost when it comes to guitars. Any advise on this can do nothing but help.thanks.
The other guy is basically correct, I just have a couple of more " make sure you do this" tips.
Battery: check
plug the guitar into the tuner: check
turn the volume knob on the guitar to 10: check
Start at the 1st string "E" , the thickest string. pluck the note.
Now depending on the tuner, (most of them are automatically adjusted ) The note the tuner hears will be displayed on the tuner. If it says D you have to tune it higher if says A you tune it lower.
the notes should be E A D G B E
Hopefully the guitar was tuned enough at the store not to be too far off so you know basically what the low E note sounds like.
Then when you get close to the note there can be (on the fender tuner) a red light on the right side and a red light on the left side and a green light in the middle right side means too high and to tune it down, left side, too low, tune it up. solid green means it's tuned. I had one like that.
OR
It can be a needle gauge, and the needle should go to the center of the scale, right too high, left too low.

(it's for an acoustic guitar but the technique is explained.
One tip for the stratocaster guitar. once you tune the guitar strings, recheck it, because once the strings are tight, they will pull the tremolo bridge up a bit and all the strings will be a bit low, so retune it until it's stable, once it's close you'll be alright.
Also one more important detail about preparing stratocaster for play when you first get one.
If you look at the tremolo arm (whammy bar) it's attached to the guitar "bridge". On new strats, this tremolo system is not properly adjusted. (unless the store did this for you)
you will see the bridge lies flat against the body. The proper position of the bridge is to have the rear of the bridge "floating" about 1/8" above the body.

this is the instruction manual for the guitar. you will need to adjust the tremolo.
also this website will show you how as well

hope that was helpful...
