DVD playback on PC looks like video tape when the source was actually film?
I can build a PC in under an hour. Solve almost any problem. Video settings however drive me nuts. I'm not a gamer so I guess that's why I lack in this area. I built a powerful HTPC and since I'm not a gamer, I didn't go crazy on the video card although I would think it's respectable. My needs were good streaming video and DVD playback. I have a ATI Radeon 4670 from Gigabyte. The DVD playback always looks sort of like video tape. It's the same look as an LCD TV with anti Judder capability if you know what I mean. Which one of the million settings could be affecting this. The refresh rate is set to 60 hz on my small lcd monitor. I get the same results on my 40 inch Samsung LCD.
Any help would be grateful.
Thanks,
Mike
Thanks Bytefield you pointed me in the right direction. It was the True Theater Motion option in the Power DVD settings. I like the effect sometimes.
You probably have the frame interpolation feature turned on. This is basically the same as the anti-judder feature in LCDs, but performed in software. It creates intermediate frames that smooth out motion. You can disable it in your player configuration.
It's funny that some people have a negative association with old videotape versus film appearance. Video, with its higher frame rate, looked more real, but film usually meant better content, so we became conditioned to think that higher frame rates meant cheesy content.
Personally, I prefer the higher frame rates provided by interpolation, it provides better visual fidelity.
Whats On My YouTube Today?
Old 9-track tape drive and 10,5 inch magnetic tape.
