Center channel speakers tend to be not that great, but regular speakers rock.
I'm thinking, take a regular speaker, and use it on it's side(standing up would block the TV) as a center channel speaker. Would that work? And is there a way to wire a pair of speakers off of one center channel jack? That would really rock!
It depends on the "regular" speaker design. A typical 3-way probably wouldn't really work that well on its side. A vertical MTM laid on its side will work as well as a horizontal "center" MTM. Horizontal MTM's are generally not ideal but there is nothing special about horizontal MTM center speakers. It is possible to use linear phase crossovers with concentric pairs in an MTM configuration that will not have the typical lobbing effects but this requires digital crossovers to attain.
The problem with the typical speaker with a woofer, midrange, and tweeter is that the dispersion along that axis is usually pretty messed up. If kept in a relatively straight line the horizontal axis has pretty uniform dispersion. So, standing upright the typical speaker has relatively uniform horizontal dispersion but not so great vertical dispersion. You don't need much uniform vertical dispersion because if the tweeter is about ear level, your typical listening position is within the narrow vertical dispersion optimum. You do need good horizontal dispersion because some are sitting in the center of the listening area and some are not. If you lay the typical speaker on its side, you now have good vertical dispersion and really bad horizontal dispersion... just the opposite of what you need.
In my opinion the ultimate center speaker is a horizontal CBT. At least that was my solution...
This is a 7.5 feet wide 120 deg arc CBT with very well controlled horizontal dispersion from below 200 Hz up. Dispersion limits are set to +/- 45 deg. Below 200 Hz the dispersion begins to widen just like a conventional speaker. It doesn't have any of the lobbing problems of a horizontal MTM. I suppose its a bit extreme but it doesn't have any problem keeping up with the floor to ceiling line array mains. If you're willing to go DIY for your center speaker this would be your best solution although it is not a trivial speaker to build and it requires 7 channels of amplification to drive.
