Is an in-built acoustic guitar equalizer worth it?
I've been playing the acoustic guitar for like 5 months now, and well, my guitar doesn't have a pickup in it which makes amplification an issue when i play at casual events. So I've decided to put in a pickup, but then this guitar service guy tells me, if I'm putting in a pickup anyway, it'd be better if i put in a Fishman 4 band equalizer which comes with it's own pickup and jack and everything for about 50$. He can also put in just a regular budget pickup without an eq or anything for like 10-15$.
So, my question is, whether the in-built eq is worth the extra bucks or do you think i should settle for just a regular pickup for now with my level of guitar expertise - about 5 months??
I think built-in EQ is a really bad idea. There's no good reason not to use an EQ pedal, the EQ on your amp, the EQ on the house mixer, or the EQ on an active DI such as ones made by LR Baggs. This way you have control over the type of EQ you get, the quality of the unit, the number of bands and the ability to choose affected frequencies. A built-in EQ is inevitably going to be low-quality and non-versatile, and I don't even want to think about how they have to mutilate your instrument in order to install it. By sticking with outboard equipment, you are free to mix and match to find your favorite sounds, and you can continue to upgrade as your playing improves, and your guitar is still in one piece. If you feel the need to shape your tone, the performance of one of the EQ options I mentioned will greatly exceed any help that 4-band EQ would have given you.
