How do I install a kick starter in my 1981 Yamaha 400 XS?
I have the starter shaft, but I want to be sure that I install in the right way, or if you know how to wire it with the original wire harness let me know. I would like to buy a new wire harness if I need to wire it up, but I would rather have the kick starter for the motor. Thanks.
Go get a shop manual it should tell you how to install everything and wire anything up. If you are trying to install a kickstart on an engine that came with electric start only then you might want to look into some older model 400 xs' that had both. My 76 xs360 had both, and you might be able to use 360 parts as well. The only difference between the two bikes were the bore and stroke of the engines. You may want to look into the engine models before you get too committed. Hope that helps.
