What vibrates in a digital watch to make it operate?

I need to know what vibrates in a watch to make it move, I believe it is quartz but I need some more info.

There is a tiny 32.768KHz quartz crystal that determines the frequency. It is generally in the form of a tiny metal cylinder:

Now, even those cheap analog clocks from the dollar store are really digital clocks. Take one apart, you find very few gears, a chip under a blob of plastic, and a 32.768KHz quartz crystal. That in turn drives a tiny motor that drives the hands, with the gears handling the ratios between the second, minute, and hour hands. If it takes a battery, it has the same thing.

32.768KHz is used because it divides down easily by powers of two to 1Hz. 32.768KHz/2^15 = 1Hz

This quartz crystal in a clock or watch is often referred to as a "tuning fork", but that is only an analogy, it is not literally a tiny tuning fork but a slice of quartz that vibrates at it's physical resonant frequency via the piezoelectric effect.

In a digital watch, that 1Hz (one per second) oscillator drives a string of counters to keep track of the time. In stop watches, the frequency may be divided down to only 100Hz or 1000Hz in order to keep time to 1/100th or 1/1000th of a second.

Tabletop clocks or any clock that plugs in may use a higher crystal frequency. Lower crystal frequency means less power, so wristwatches use 32.768KHz crystals, as a rule.
