I have four 6l6 factory tubes in my guitar amp but one of them finally burnt out. It still works, I can still play but it sound's fuzzier than what it should sound like (I like my amp to sound dirty).
I'm planning on buying new tubes but I need to know if I need to buy a new matched pair of tubes or if I can replace just the one that burnt out. What would you suggest???
You could just replace the one, and that would help with the "fuzzy" sound. But, all of those tubes are probably the same age. Since one has burned out, can the others be far behind?
Your best bet is to replace the output tubes as a matched set.
You're amp has what is known as a Class AB power output section. Without getting too technical here, the way this circuit works is that half of the tubes amplify the positive half of the waveform, and the other 2 amplify the negative half of the waveform.
If the tubes are mismatched, then the waveform is going to be distorted (and not the good kind of distortion).
If your amp has adjustable bias, then it would be a good idea to have a qualified guitar tech check that the tubes are biased properly. That can make a big difference in your tone and tube life.
