Baby kitten that isn't pooping?
We found a stranded kitten that is about 4 weeks old - sadly, not yet ready to leave it's mother - and it is not going neither poop nor pee, which is making it miserable. She is scared of us but is slowly coming around, but she is still scared enough to not use the bathroom (and also doesn't have the mother's help). We tried using a warm, wet wash cloth and paper towel to try and substitute the mother's duty, but nothing is working. Could anyone give me any advice as to how to help the kitten?
Thank you very kindly
Remember that very young kittens may not go poop every day. It's their diet usually. You didn't say what you were feeding her, but if you're feeding her milk replacement try mixing a tiny bit more water with the milk replacement powder which will help a lot with her going potty. It says on the bottle1 part powder, 2 parts water.Try a tiny bit of mineral oil in her formula. I'm mainly concerned that she isn't peeing either. Does she have access to water, either from the fountain or glass bowl? I learned really fast that my baby boy Milo wouldn't drink water from the floor. He hasn't yet learned how to drink from the faucet like my Smokey Joe did, but he likes his bowls (yes he has two, one plastic and one glass) in the sink and so I can run fresh water in them when he wants it. He loves the water and doesn't even mind getting his paws wet at all. You might want to try this; Prepare a bowl of warm water and some cotton balls, tissues, gauze or a soft cloth. Dip the cotton ball into the water, squeeze out the excess and, using a gentle circular motion, massage your kitten's abdomen and anal area. Her natural response is to eliminate urine and stool. Don't worry if she doesn't pass a stool after every feeding or even every day. Keep stimulating until she stops eliminating, though it's important to know when to stop, because stimulating your kitten for too long can make her delicate skin sore and raw.Another method is to stimulate the kitten over a sink. Put a bowl in the sink to catch the waste and start a steady trickle of warm water at the faucet, keeping the faucet away from the kitten. Run the water over the cotton ball, squeeze out the excess water and stimulate her as above. Or, you can simply place the rear end of your kitten into the gentle trickle of warm water (make sure it is not too hot!) and then start stimulating the abdomen and anal area. She should let loose and eliminate quickly. Then wrap her up in a warm towel and keep him close until he is fully dried. The consistency of the kitten's stools will give you an idea as to whether you are feeding him the right amount and strength of formula. Normal stools have a toothpaste consistency and are a yellow, mustard color. If the kitten develops diarrhea, you may be overfeeding or the formula may be too rich for his digestive system.
As far as her being scared, what I did was just let my Milo take the run of the house, he snooped into everything and it took him about three days to finally calm down enough to start purring. He's making himself a routine now. And he finds it entertaining when I watch him play and laugh at him. He runs and plays alone very well. I chase him and he chases me. Oh, sorry got carried away there, really enjoy talking about my Milo, LOL. I wish you much luck and sincere happiness with you kitten! She's young and so you must be patient, just like a toddler, soon enough she will be a friskey little one and you will be so very intrigued and fascinated. Just love her like a child and she will be very happy for many years to come.
