1. Tape. Typically polyester with ferric oxides applied. Tapes even used acetate (I think) and paper base. Better oxides allowed stronger signal and/or sharper highs.
2; And amplifier. First a head preamp, then a speaker amplifier, if an all-in-one unit. "Decks" had just preamps. Most tape recorders ran the amplifiers backwards to record.

You could get at least 10, 7 1/2, and 4 inch reels, and tape came if various grades and thicknesses. A typical 7 1/2 blank tape held 1800 ft, which holds 96 minutes per side at 3 3/4 IPS.
