You have a circuit with one capacitor of 2 microFarads charged to a potential difference of 2000 Volts, a resistor of 550 ohms and another uncharged capacitor of 6 microFarads. After a long time, some sort of equilibrium point is reached and you are asked to find the charge on each of the capacitors at this equilibrium point.
I had this on a test today and I wasn't sure whether in the end they would both have the same voltage since they are continuously pushing against each other, they would have the same charge since current across a series is the same, or if all of the charge in the 2 microFarad capacitor would go to the 6 microFarad capacitor.
I need to see the circuit. How are they interconnected?
If they are just in series with no other components connected and the ends open, ie, no loop, then the 2µF cap will slowly discharge to zero, via the internal leakage that every cap has. Nothing will happen to the 6µF cap, as there is not way for charge to get to it.
Or, if the 3 interconnect in a loop, then essentially the two caps are in parallel, and they share the charge. This happens quickly, in a fraction of a second.
With the 2 caps in parallel, their value is 8 µF and the charge stays the same at 4000 µC, so the voltage is
V = Q/C = 4000/8 = 500 volts
but I may be misunderstanding the connections.
